I used to just buy whatever my kids asked me to buy. Be it books, toys, or whatever they wanted. But then I realised this was not sustainable, both for my pocket, and for the kids' financial education.
Now whenever they ask me for things, I tell them to save up for it. They both have their own piggy banks at home, and will save whatever money they get from the festive seasons and also from their allowance.
In the beginning they would run out of their pocket money real fast but they slowly got better with their budgeting through experiences. We’re still learning as we go along and the HSBC FUN-nancial Guide is a great resource for us, especially in teaching the girls financial concepts in a fun, easy and interactive manner.
To my other fellow parents, do you find yourself facing the same sticky situation at home? Just check out funnancials.my/ and try out the FUN-nancial Guide with your kids! You can thank me later!
By the way, talking about finance for children, @shaikhshahnaz and I spoke at a LIVE virtual dialogue, organized by HSBC Malaysia on ‘Raising Young Money Managers: Finance for Children’, you can watch it at HSBC Malaysia’s YouTube channel. So do watch it, and start having important conversations with your kids to help them develop their financial literacy.
